While a temporary freeze on energy bills is a welcome step in the right direction, disabled people are already being pushed into poverty with current bills going through the roof. Existing support does not go far enough. Disabled people are being hit particularly hard by rising prices, with some having to choose between charging their wheelchair and eating a meal.

More targeted support

Even after today’s announcement, people still face energy bills that are already sky-high and rising to an estimated £2,500 per year. Many disabled people are desperate for more targeted support during the cost of living crisis as they struggle to pay for food, transport and essential costs relating to disability.

The government must immediately increase benefits in line with inflation and then keep benefits at pace with inflation. The government must also restore eligibility for the Warm Home Discount (WHD) for all people on Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

Support for social care providers

Rising energy bills also mean several social care providers across the sector are at risk of financial collapse, leaving disabled people without crucial support. The sector needs a long-term plan to cope with high energy bills.
