Carmarthen scrubs up well through Can Do!

A pop-up shop in Carmarthen Market has raised £508 for charity after local young people pitched in to create an array of homemade organic soaps and bath bombs.

I’m really proud of our Can Doers. They dived into this soap-making project and in doing so have raised a lot of money for two important local causes.

The proceeds were split between disability charity Leonard Cheshire and local children’s hospice Ty Hafan.

Forty young people teamed up for the sale after learning to make their own soaps as part of Leonard Cheshire’s Can Do programme, which teaches young people new skills.

The Can Doers celebrated their success with the Mayor and Mayoress of Carmarthen and Labour Assembly Member Joyce Watson, along with their friends, family and carers, at a special event on 12 September.

Joyce Watson AM, Assembly Member, Mid & West Wales, said:

‘As well as raising money for two wonderful charities – Ty Hafan Hospice and Leonard Cheshire – the Bubble Surprise Enterprise project has helped participants learn new skills and gain confidence in doing so.

‘Congratulations to Carmarthenshire’s Can Doers. Having developed their own range of organic soaps and bath bombs, they really can enjoy the sweet smell of success!’

Cllr Jeff Thomas, Mayor of Carmarthen, who donated £100, said:

‘It's great for everyone to accept and to conquer new challenges which is what Can Do is all about. I pay tribute to Leonard Cheshire for organising all of this.’

Charlotte Aitken, Programme Coordinator for Can Do, said:

Charlotte also expressed the charity’s thanks to Carmarthenshire Athletic for donating their club as a venue for the event.
