Social care in and around the UK: Country-specific advice

This page is aimed at disabled adults living in and around the UK who are looking for social care. It’s for people looking for advice that is specific to their area. 

 

Social care: UK advice and guidance  

As well as the country specific advice below, there is a useful Gov.uk page called Find Your Local Council. This should work for councils in England, Wales and Scotland. See also Health and Social Care Trusts in Northern Ireland.  

 

  • England: Gov.uk provides a way to search for your local authority social care department and Skills for Care provide useful resources 

 

  • Wales: Social Care Wales (SCW) provides good advice and support information. Age Cymru provides factsheets with detailed explanations of how legislation affects specific countries. It covers older people but also applies to disabled adults.  

 

  • Scotland: The Scottish Government has useful resources. In Scotland, Direct Payments often come under a category called Self-Directed Support. 

 

  • Northern Ireland: The government body NIDirect provides good advice. NIDirect have pages about several topics including:

Your local authority might not appear on UK council searches below. So if you know the name of your local authority, search online for that + ‘adult social services’.  

You can also find links to the relevant local authority departments for the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey 

 

What do I do if I change my mind about support, or if my needs change? 

You can change your mind about receiving social care support at any time. You can ask to have your social care reviewed if you feel that your needs have changed.
