From Bedbound to Breakthrough: Banbury Local Rebuilds Life After Brain Injury

By Bethany Wilshaw

When Andrew arrived at Agnes Court in May 2018, his life had been turned upside down. Just a year earlier, he had suffered a life-threatening aneurysm, which led to a severe brain haemorrhage. The incident left him bedbound, barely able to speak, and fully dependent on others for his care. He underwent major surgery, requiring part of his skull to be removed, and wore a protective helmet until it could be replaced with a bespoke cranial plate.

Striding towards the future

Only three years into marriage, Andrew was facing unimaginable challenges. But with a determined spirit and a clear goal to return home and live independently, he embarked on a journey of transformation.

Supported by his close knit family and a dedicated physiotherapy team at Agnes Court, Andrew began to rebuild his life. With expert guidance from his physiotherapist, Ewa, and others, he made significant strides in his recovery. His journey was not without setbacks, including the emotional toll of a marriage breakdown, but Andrew’s resolve never faltered.

Over time, Andrew’s determination led to extraordinary progress. He completed a six mile charity walk with the aid of a walker, disappointed only that he couldn’t go farther. He later learned to walk unaided and ultimately achieved one of his personal milestones: walking independently into his former workplace.

Accomplishing recovery and more

In January 2023, Andrew reached another major goal; moving into his own home in his former hometown, close to family and living independently once again. He now leads an active lifestyle, regularly attending the gym, volunteering weekly at the local food bank, and participating in 5K, 7K, and 10K walking challenges.

Andrew remains a frequent visitor to Agnes Court, recently returning to make a generous donation to the physiotherapy team as a token of his gratitude for their role in his recovery.

Andrew’s journey is a powerful testament to the life changing impact of expert care, perseverance, and the unyielding support of loved ones. His story serves as an inspiration to all facing adversity.
