Disabled youngsters to spruce up North Shields
A group of green-fingered young disabled people from Newcastle are launching a crowdfunding appeal to transform an underused community garden into an ‘amazing place for everyone to enjoy’.
Young gardeners at Can Do Newcastle, a volunteer group run by disability charity Leonard Cheshire, want to raise £10,000 for their new garden at the Linskill Community Centre in North Shields.
The youngsters will create a vibrant and inclusive space for visitors and for children from the onsite nursery.
The project is designed to boost the confidence and develop the skills of the gardeners, all aged between 16 and 35. They will be working in partnership with volunteers from the Linskill centre.
Ann Henderson, Leonard Cheshire’s Can Do project coordinator, said:
‘This is an exciting project and the young people involved have made great progress. We’ve tidied things up and brightened the space.
‘To really make the space more appealing, functional and accessible, we need funds.
‘We’d love to fully makeover the space with your support, and make it a truly amazing place for everyone to enjoy.’
More funding will cover more accessible raised flower beds and sensory plants for those with complex needs, amongst other features.
The group is also aiming to replace old AstroTurf and rotten decking with new flooring, as well as adding seating areas. To develop creative skills, the group will embellish walled areas with a mosaic.
