Newport Can Do garden project: Part five

Katrina

Katrina updates us on what Newport Can Doers have been up to.

Newport Can Doer are working with the staff and students to build an outdoor classroom and garden, thanks to the National Garden Scheme.

The garden will have an accessible path accessing all areas. There will be flowers and vegetables grown, which through the summer will be open to the public to do a summer sale. The garden will also be open to the public to take part in community courses throughout the year. There will also be a small animal section of the garden.

Changing plans

Since our last blog there have been quite a few changes happening with the garden. There will no longer be having a large converted shipping container due to planning permission and to keep in siting with the college area. I

nstead, there will be a large greenhouse, a polytonal, and a pretty, little, summer house. These three constructions will be used for teaching areas, as well as the garden itself.

The students have been busy taking photographs of the area for their booklets and making bird boxes. They've also made a bird bath from models of their own hands! They have also had the arrival of their new, furry, friends that will be living in the animal corner of the garden.

Community spirit

Students from the engineering side of the Campus also put a presentation together to help raise funds for the garden. The funds that they raised paid for the materials for the new rabbit hotel that is being built.

Andrea,  a tutor from the ILS department and her daughter will also be running the Caerphilly 10km on the 19 of May, to help raise funds.

So many people are working together to help make this garden a beautiful place to learn. Such lovely, positive things taking place for the outdoor classroom!
