Newcastle care home for disabled adults rated ‘Good’ in all areas by CQC

A Newcastle care home supporting disabled adults with complex needs has been rated ‘Good’ in all areas by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Bradbury Wing, in Rosebery Crescent, Jesmond, is run by disability charity Leonard Cheshire and supports up to 20 disabled adults, including people with brain injuries and learning disabilities.

The newly published CQC report praised the quality of care at the home, highlighting safe, person-centred support, strong leadership, and a respectful and inclusive staff culture.

Inspectors found that “staff delivered safe, person-centred care, knew people well and supported them to achieve positive outcomes.” The report also said, “the staff culture was respectful, inclusive and stable, with many long-standing staff.”

CQC inspectors found leadership at the home was visible and supportive, with staff describing managers as approachable and responsive. One staff member told inspectors: “Management are amazing… very supportive to people we support and staff.”

The report highlighted the compassionate and personalised support provided at Bradbury Wing. Staff were found to respond to people’s individual needs and wishes, while encouraging independence, choice and involvement in activities based on personal interests.

Bradbury Wing has also built strong links with the local community, supporting people to take part in local events and maintain important relationships outside the home.

Relatives and visiting professionals gave positive feedback. One relative said staff were “caring and know the residents very well” and “go above and beyond”. Another said: “It feels more like a family and not like care staff and residents.”

Staff used care plans and risk assessments to monitor changes in people’s needs and acted quickly when support needed adapting. Inspectors also found staff had a good understanding of safeguarding and took appropriate action when needed.

The report recognised a focus on continuous learning, innovation and improvement, with staff encouraged to suggest better ways of working and raise concerns.

Bradbury Wing service manager Mthelo Moyo said: “We are delighted that Bradbury Wing has been recognised in this way. The team here are dedicated, experienced and skilled. They care deeply about the wellbeing, safety and outcomes of people we support. That’s what motivates us all.”
