Do you have free time in the early evenings or weekends? By volunteering as a Befriender you can help with social activities, getting out and about in the community or just visiting for a chat and catch up.
It could be once a week, fortnightly or monthly, whatever suits the volunteer best. It can be for as long as the volunteer wants it to be it could be an hourly visit, 2 hourly depending on the activity.
Initially it may be that the volunteer is happy to come along for a chat and a cup of tea. The volunteer may be happy to escort someone to a show, café, club/pub, group session whatever they are comfortable with.
The volunteer must be willing to have a PVG check, which is required by law when working with vulnerable groups, and be able to provide 2 references. There is some training involved to give the volunteer the confidence and knowledge so they can be effective within their supporting volunteer role. The volunteer will have the support of the Volunteer Coordinator through this process and their volunteering.
