A wheely fun day for all — Cycle Together returns to Sandringham

20 March 2017

Cyclists at last years event Cyclists of all ages and abilities are coming together for West Norfolk’s premier cycling event, the annual Cycle Together.

Held at Sandringham on Sunday 18 June, the organisers are promising to make the event even bigger and better this year, with new routes and distances for all to enjoy.

Now in its fifth year, the event will retain all the popular features which regularly attract over 500 entrants.

The fully sign-posted routes, starting and finishing in the grounds of Park House at Sandringham, have been created by experienced local cyclists and are designed to take full advantage of the charms of Norfolk’s quiet back roads and villages.

There will be food and drink tents at Park House for families and cyclists to enjoy, as well as commemorative medals and the usual friendly, enthusiastic reception for all finishing cyclists.

The feed stations at Holkham for the longer routes, and Great Bircham and Shernborne for the shorter distances will again feature Park House’s legendary home-made flapjacks, as well as other nutritious snacks and energy drinks.

There will be mechanical and medical support along the routes for those which need it.

To encourage more cyclists than ever before, new distances have been created.

The 10-mile option, popular with young families, and the classic 50-mile distance have both been retained. The 20-mile route has been extended to 25 miles, and there is a new 75-mile route — giving the option of a longer ride to those who find the step up from 50 to 100 miles too daunting.

However, hard core cyclists can still choose to ride 100 miles if they wish by completing two laps of the 25 mile loop from the Holkham feed station.

Hotel manager Tess Gilder said:

‘Cycle Together Sandringham raises vital funds for Park House, which gives disabled people and their carers the chance of a much-needed holiday.

‘While 100% of the entry fees go direct to the charity, we also urge participants to raise as much as they can through sponsorship so we can do even more for our disabled guests when they visit.’

In the past four years over £60,000 has been raised, and this year it is hoped that enough money will be raised to create a new outdoor activity area suitable for wheelchair users.

This will allow more hotel visitors to make the most of the beautiful grounds at Sandringham.

Phil Davies, cycling enthusiast and Park House fundraiser said:

‘With summer on its way many of us look for the best opportunities to make the most of the great outdoors.

‘What could be better than to make a date with us and join in on Sunday 18 June.

‘You’d be part of something fun and exciting, joining hundreds of cyclists on a day to remember, and for a very worthy local cause.’
