Residents Jason Jackie and Jane with Jason holding the Mo Farah shirtThe people of Somerset are rallying together to raise money for disabled people in the county, heading to a masquerade ball where they can bid for items that include a RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight VIP day plus the chance to take to the skies with a Spitfire flight over Biggin Hill and control the aircraft.

Leonard Cheshire Disability’s Greenhill House care home, which is throwing the ball, will also be auctioning a signed Mo Farah shirt and a Porsche driving experience at Silverstone among other prizes, at Bath Assembly rooms from 7pm on Saturday 23 September.

The event is part of Leonard Cheshire Disability’s centenary celebrations to mark 100 years since its founder Group Captain Leonard Cheshire was born. All money raised will create more sporting opportunities for residents at Leonard Cheshire’s Greenhill House in Bath.

As well dinner and musical entertainment, guests can also enjoy the company of Olympic gold medal winning athlete Jason Gardener MBE, multi-medal winning Paralympian Ben Rushgrove, Paralympic Boccia player Nigel Murray MBE and Invictus Athlete Alastair ‘AJ’ Pingram.

Greenhill House resident Jane Harding said:

‘We’ve never done [an event like] this before. It’s a new experience for all of us, with so many wonderful prizes in the auction to raise money for our home. It will be amazing.

‘It’s exciting having something to look forward to. You get to dress up — you don’t get a chance to look your best every day and I know a lot of hard work has gone into [the event].

‘I am grateful for the opportunity to be involved and am looking forward to meeting the speakers, guests and fantastic [musicians] on the night.’

Tickets are already on sale and can be bought via greenhillevents@leonardcheshire.org or 01761 479902. Tickets are priced at £95 a person. Seating will be in tables of ten (masks are not compulsory!).

The ball runs from 7pm, with carriages at midnight. Any local businesses interested in sponsoring the event should contact Ann Birtwistle on ann.birtwistle@leonardcheshire.org or call 01761 479902
