Statement in response to the Work and Pensions select committee report

2 February 2017

Neil Heslop, Leonard Cheshire chief executive, said:

‘The government’s commitment to halve the disability employment gap is potentially game changing and ambitious. Today’s report recognises this and we welcome its recommendations. If implemented by the government, it will speed progress towards making work a reality for millions more disabled people.

‘Access to Work is crucial to levelling the playing field for disabled people trying to secure or keep employment. We urge the government to act on these recommendations as soon as possible to ensure Access to Work support is more easily available and portable.

‘We also welcome the committee’s recommendation that the government commit to reporting on progress towards halving the gap. This is vital for a clear focus on removing the barriers to disabled people gaining or keeping work.’
