Response to today's general election announcement

18 April 2017

In response to today's general election announcement, our chief executive Neil Heslop said:

‘Disabled people across the country will be following the outcome of this election closely.

‘It is vital the next government continues the commitment to halve the disability employment gap, taking practical steps to make this ambition a reality.

‘With disability unemployment still at nearly 40%, it is unacceptable that in 2017 disabled people still face major obstacles accessing the employment opportunities which match their ambitions.

‘Social care is a vital public service which has the power to transform lives, enabling people to connect with their friends, family and communities and move into, or stay in, education, volunteering and employment. Yet 48% of disabled adults who say they need social care do not receive any support at all.

‘For too long creating a long term sustainable funding solution for social care has not been prioritised.

‘Whoever forms the next government must finally grasp the nettle and secure all party support for a solution which provides disabled people with the dignity and opportunities they deserve.

‘We will engage with candidates up and down Britain to ensure disability equality stays on the political agenda.’
