Response to political parties manifestos

18 May 2017

In response to political parties manifestos, our chief executive Neil Heslop said:

‘With 13 million disabled people eligible to head to polling stations on 8 June — there’s been scant regard in the party manifestos to the needs of disabled people.

‘We repeat our calls for a long term, cross party solution to funding social care which ensures people are adequately supported in the future. Without all party commitment achieved through an independent commission we fear social care reform will fail.

‘Political leaders also need to get real about the problems disabled people face daily when trying to get a job. No party has reflected in their manifesto commitments the scale and urgency of the problem.

‘In 2017 there is a scandalous waste of talent. A Conservative pledge to get one million more disabled people into work over 10 years is not enough. Expansion and reform to DWP’s Access to Work scheme is required to avoid countless disabled people continuing to be locked out of the workplace for years to come.’
