Response to ONS disability employment statistics out today

16 August 2017

The ONS today released the latest labour market status (employment, unemployment and inactivity) of disabled people in the UK.

Chief executive of Leonard Cheshire Disability, Neil Heslop, said:

'We welcome the news that almost 103,000 more disabled people are in work than last year, but this pace of change is nowhere near fast enough.

'Only 49% of disabled people are employed, compared with 81% of non-disabled people.

'When disabled people miss out on opportunities because they can’t get simple adaptations, the wealth of skills and talent they have to offer goes to waste.

'Better funding and promotion of the vital Access to Work scheme is urgently needed. This pays for things like adapted keyboards, software and British Sign Language interpreters. With the right support, employers can benefit from the talent and skills disabled people have to offer.'
