Response to latest report from Sir Stephen Bubb

22 February 2016

Responding to Sir Stephen Bubb’s report Time to Change — The Challenge Ahead, Leonard Cheshire Disability’s head of policy and campaigns, Patrick Olszowski, said:

‘Yet again today’s report highlights the lack of progress on improvements in support for people with learning disabilities, following the tragic events at Winterbourne View.

‘Nearly five years on we are still waiting to see progress for the 3,500 people still in inpatient units, often far from their families and communities.

‘The government must take action now to bring about meaningful change and ensure everyone can live the life they choose free from the fear of abuse and neglect.

‘We welcome the call for a new commissioner to protect and promote the rights of people with learning disabilities to drive forward this critical work, and would like to see people with learning disabilities leading this work.’
