A response to the latest employment statistics

17 May 2017

In response to the latest ONS employment statistics, our chief executive Neil Heslop said:

‘Having around 172,000 more disabled people in work compared to last year is good news but there’s an extremely long way to go.

‘It is very concerning that a huge gap remains between the proportion of disabled people employed and other people of working age. To even halve this, any government would need to get over one million more disabled people into work.

‘Disabled people should be able to access the types of employment opportunities everyone wants for themselves and their families. Whoever is in power after the election must reassert a commitment to removing barriers disabled people still face when looking for work.

‘The vital Access to Work scheme helps to do this by paying for things like adapted keyboards, software and BSL interpreters. It needs to be expanded and better promoted as a matter of urgency.’
