Response to The King's Fund, Nuffield Trust and Health Foundation social care briefing

8 November 2016

A statement in response to The King's Fund, the Nuffield Trust and the Health Foundation briefing on social care, Leonard Cheshire Disability’s chief executive Neil Heslop said:

‘The latest briefing from The King's Fund, the Nuffield Trust and the Health Foundation is further evidence that social care funding is in crisis.

‘Beyond the figures, we are hearing that many disabled people’s lives are on hold because of a lack of support to live independently.

‘This includes people living on snacks and skipping meals because social care isn’t there, a person without emergency support who got stuck for hours when their bed hoist broke down, and someone who faced unemployment when their morning care visit was cut in half. This is simply unacceptable.

‘It is vital the government takes action now, ahead of the Autumn Statement to ensure both the NHS and social care are appropriately funded as we move into the winter months.

‘In the longer term, we need an honest national conversation on social care led by a cross-party commission. Without this, older and disabled people will continue to struggle.’
