Response to Kings Fund and Nuffield Trust social care report

15 September 2016

Responding to the ‘Social care for older people; Home Truths’ report by the Kings Fund and Nuffield Trust, policy and research manager at Leonard Cheshire Disability Alice Gulland said:

'Today's report from the Kings Fund and Nuffield Trust reflects the severity of the crisis facing social care right now. We have reached a tipping point, and this is no longer a problem our government can afford to ignore. Sustainable funding of social care must be a top priority in the forthcoming autumn statement.

'Alongside this, now is the time for a national conversation led by the government about how we should prioritise and resource social care in the future.

'Failure to take action now will leave thousands of disabled and older people today and in the future isolated and without the vital support they need to get up, washed and dressed, or forced to make impossible choices in flying care visits.

'As a first step, we support calls for the government to bring forward the Better Care Fund money earmarked for later in the Parliament so that people who need support right now are not left without help. It will then be for the May government to urgently work on a long term settlement to ensure care is fair for everyone.'
