Response to ITV's Tonight programme, Growing Old: Care in Crisis
8 October 2015
Following ITV’s Growing Old: Care in Crisis report on the Tonight programme, Leonard Cheshire Disability’s director of corporate affairs, Andy Cole, commented:
‘Our care staff do the most incredible job every single day, often in very challenging circumstances. They are frequently told how crucial their care is for the disabled people we support.
‘But we know many disabled people receive less support than they need, having to make impossible daily choices between going to the toilet or having a cup of tea in ‘flying’ homecare visits. This can’t go on — social care services urgently need investment to ensure that disabled and older people get the compassionate care they need to live independently and with dignity.
‘Under-funding social care is a false economy. It places huge pressure on the NHS and takes people out of work to care for family members. And with the introduction of the National Living Wage, budgets will be squeezed even further. It’s time for some fresh approaches by the chancellor in the spending review, which we remain confident he will deliver.’
