Response to Health Select Committee report on planning for winter pressure in A&E

3 November 2016

Commenting in response to the Health Select Committee’s report on planning for winter pressure in Accident and Emergency departments, Leonard Cheshire Disability’s director of campaigns, Peter Jenkins, said:

‘The Health Select Committee is right to highlight the pressure that the severe underfunding of social care is placing on A&E departments across the country.

‘It is vital the government takes action now, ahead of the autumn statement, to ensure both systems are appropriately funded as we move into the winter months. In the longer term, we need an honest national conversation on social care led by a cross-party commission.

Leonard Cheshire Disability’s research found that 40% of disabled adults who do not receive enough social care say it has had a negative impact on their physical health, while 1 in 11 say they have spent more time in hospital as a result. This is a national scandal and unsustainable for the NHS, which too often has to pick up the pieces.’
