Response to government announcement of an extra £900 million for social care

15 December 2016

Responding to the announcement by the communities secretary, Sajid Javed, that an extra £900 million will be made available for social care, Leonard Cheshire Disability's chief executive, Neil Heslop, said:

'We are pleased the government is finally recognising the severity of the financial crisis facing social care.

'However, this is yet another unsustainable, temporary fix that will leave thousands of disabled people without essential care. Devolving responsibility to already hard pressed local authorities is simply dodging the issue.

'The government must face up to the fact that this is a problem that needs a long term solution. We are disappointed they have not taken the opportunity to announce a cross-party commission on the future of health and social care.'
