Response to First Bus wheelchair judgement

Commenting on the decision reached in the High Court today to uphold an appeal by First Bus about their responsibility to ensure that wheelchair users are given priority to the wheelchair space on buses, Leonard Cheshire Disability’s director of corporate affairs, Andy Cole, said:

‘We are disappointed with the High Court’s judgement today, which does not provide enough clarity and certainty for disabled bus passengers that the space they need will definitely be made available for them. We hope that if this case moves to the Supreme Court there will be an even stronger judgement that will provide certainty for disabled people who need to use the wheelchair space.

‘The judgement was very clear that all bus companies must be doing more and making adjustments to ensure their service is properly accessible for disabled people — but failed to give a definite steer that this should be fully enforceable.

‘The case shows the immense impact that individual campaigners can have, and makes it very clear that bus companies must go further to ensure that disabled people are able to access their services.’
