Howdens Joinery takes on Great North Run for Yorkshire care home

Claire Cook at last years Great North RunHowden’s Joinery is sparing 30 members of its staff to take on the Great North Run this weekend to raise money for leading charity Leonard Cheshire Disability.

Amongst runners from the company will be assistant manager Claire Cook, a triathlete from Sunderland who will be on official trials for Team GB this October.

This will be Claire’s fifth Great North Run.

She said:

‘I’m looking forward to catching up with all the people from previous Great North Runs who, like me, keep coming back each year.’

Claire hasn’t done any specific training for the race, but as she’s coming to the end of triathlon season, she’s managed to complete a whopping eight triathlons since May.

Despite this, she still thinks the Great North Run will be tough.

She said:

‘Running 13 miles is still a big challenge for me! The hardest bit will be the distance.’

Claire’s love of triathlons started back in 2012, when she was introduced to the sport through Leonard Cheshire’s Tri Together triathlons.

‘The problem was I couldn’t swim!

‘I’d also just been diagnosed with asthma, so I had to learn to manage that.

‘In 2013 I decided to properly learn to swim and by 2014 I had qualified for Team GB.

‘I have Raynaud’s [Syndrome] though, so I had to fit what I’m doing round hospital appointments each year and if I’m going to swim in water it has to be a certain temperature.

‘This October I’ll be hoping to qualify for Team GB again so I can represent Great Britain in the European Championships in Spain next year.’

For now, Claire is concentrating on raising money for Leonard Cheshire.

‘The great thing about Leonard Cheshire is they tell you where the money you raise goes, so you can see the difference you’ll be making.’

This year, all funds raised by the Howdens Great North Run team will transform the garden area at White Windows, a care home in West Yorkshire.

The majority of people living there are wheelchair users.

The money raised will help make the beautiful environment surrounding the home more accessible.
