Disabled people urged to share their stories ahead of enquiry on adult social care
2 August 2016
A leading disability charity is urging disabled people to share their experiences of adult social care ahead of a government enquiry.
Recent research by Leonard Cheshire Disability found thousands of disabled and older people in England are still facing undignified and unsafe care in 15 minute slots, despite official guidance against these ‘flying’ visits.
The charity sent Freedom of Information requests to all 152 local authorities responsible for adult social care.
This revealed 18 councils are still using 15 minute care visits to carry out essential tasks such as washing, dressing and eating.
The statutory Care Act guidance and advice from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence says 15 minutes is too short for care visits providing intimate, personal care.
In light of these shocking findings, Leonard Cheshire Disability is urging people to support the charity’s submission to the Communities and Local Government Committee inquiry into the financial sustainability of local authority adult social care and the quality of care provided.
The charity wants to hear from anyone experiencing issues with their social care, for example, people who have had their care packages cut, and who now have to wait to be fed, bathed and go outside.
Leonard Cheshire Disability campaigns manager, Emma McEwan, said:
‘The government’s recent cuts to health and social care are having disastrous effects on disabled people’s lives, and are putting more pressure on families to deliver that care themselves.
‘We often hear from disabled people, that without the right social care they often can’t leave the house. If this sounds familiar to you — we want to hear from you.
‘We are also looking for anyone who would like to share their experiences, or the experiences of a friend or family member, so that we can put them forward to the government’s inquiry into this issue.’
