Helen Rice and Paula McGuire first met at a taster session we held for our inclusive triathlon event in Glasgow in 2013. The pair started training together, supporting and motivating each other during their preparations for the swim, cycle, and run challenge. It was never going to be a walk in the park for either of them — Helen had to overcome the extra challenges presented by her disability and Paula had a fear of water. But the pair came through to pull off a triathlon triumph. And what's more, they’re back for more of the action this summer.

Helen RiceHelen says: ’I was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome three years ago — before being diagnosed I couldn’t even make a cup of tea without help. After intensive physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, I started swimming and signed up for Tri Together when I saw an advert at my local swimming baths. The most important thing I learnt was that the biggest obstacle is thinking, “I can’t do that.” You’ve just got to show yourself that you can!

‘Taking part in Tri Together last year was brilliant and the team at Leonard Cheshire Disability were amazing. It was the first time I had taken part in a triathlon and it was fantastic fun and the sense of achievement was just brilliant. It was a great way to meet new people and I’m delighted to have a great friend, and running partner, in Paula.’

Paula McGuirePaula says: ‘Tri Together triathlon appealed to me because it is such a friendly and accessible introduction to the sport for a complete beginner like me.

‘After the Olympics in 2012, I set myself the challenge of trying 17 sports before the Commonwealth Games this summer. My challenge wasn’t easy, particularly as I have a severe phobia of water, but I worked with an expert to help me conquer my fear. Last year I swam with a float, but I’m hoping I will be able to do without one this year. It’s a big step for me, but I’m looking forward to the challenge!’

If you'd like to join Helen and Paula to take on the challenge of Tri Together this year, sign up now. And we still have places at our next taster session on Saturday 24 May if you'd like to try out a bit of the course and meet other participants. You just might end up making a new friend too!
