Josephine's story

10 October 2014

Josephine in class with her classmates in the backgroundJosephine is from Kenya. She was raised by her grandmother, Mama Friday, after her parents died when she was three years old. When we met Josephine, her grandmother was really struggling — Josephine was unable to talk and would wander all over the village.

We encouraged Mama Friday to take Josephine for an assessment, where she was diagnosed with a mild form of autism. With our support and encouragement, Josephine began attending Kowuor Primary school, one of our inclusive education project schools.

At first, she would cry all the time and would be become quite aggressive when anyone approached her. However, the teachers who had been trained through our project took her under their wing and now Josephine is a different child. She happily takes part in lessons and her teachers say she has endeared herself to the whole school community.
