Lotteries and raffles: terms and conditions

These terms and conditions will cover any lottery or raffle held by Leonard Cheshire Disability which is deemed a society lottery in the Gambling Commission guidelines.

1. Eligible players

  • Entrants to the raffle must be age 16 or over.
  • In Northern Ireland tickets can only be purchased by those named individuals sent tickets by Leonard Cheshire Disability. They should not be sold on to family and friends.
  • Entry is open to Leonard Cheshire Disability volunteers and staff but excludes: Leonard Cheshire Disability trustees or directors; or Leonard Cheshire Disability employees or third parties each directly involved in the administration or management of the Raffle, or with the ability to influence the Raffle results.
  • We do not knowingly target any persons who are not eligible to play or anyone who has requested not to be included in raffle promotions. See section 9: Protection of children and vulnerable people.

2. Draw for the winners 

  • The draw will be conducted at Leonard Cheshire Disability's office in Wolverhampton by a briefed member of staff.
  • Draws are conducted using a blind draw.
  • A ticket will be drawn for each prize we offer.

3. Late entries

  • Entries received after the close date of the lottery (12 December) will be treated as a donation.

4. Access to terms and conditions

  • Basic rules are outlined on the reverse of the lottery tickets.
  • Full terms and conditions are available from our website and on request.

5. Winners lists

  • The list of winners is published on our website within one working day of the draw. Winners' information is also available on request.
  • The list will show: the lottery number, initial and surname of winner and the prize won.
  • Leonard Cheshire Disability will contact the winner as soon as possible after the draw to notify them, if possible by telephone but always in writing through the post.

6. Integrity and security

  • Leonard Cheshire Disability keeps a record of all individuals who have been sent lottery tickets and the relevant ticket numbers.
  • Any unsold raffle tickets that are returned to us are recorded on the supporters record before being re-allocated or destroyed.
  • All returned lottery ticket stubs (counterfoils) are kept securely at Leonard Cheshire Disability's office.

7. Complaints procedure 

Leonard Cheshire Disability recognises that there may be times when concerns may be raised. It is our policy to encourage free communication so that any difficulty can be quickly resolved.

In the first instance, our supporter services team should be contacted on 0300 3030 074 to discuss your concern or complaint. If the supporter is not satisfied with the initial response received, the complaint should be put in writing to the Director of Fundraising, Leonard Cheshire Disability, 66 South Lambeth Road, London SW8 1RL. The Director of Fundraising will send an acknowledgement in writing within two working days of receipt and begin an investigation. Every effort will be made to complete this investigation, and reply in writing, within five working days of receipt, with the findings, recommendations and proposed actions. In the event of an agreement not being reached between the Director of Fundraising and yourself, your complaint will be forwarded to Independent Betting Adjudication Services ltd (IBAS).

IBAS are a confidential adjudication service with whom Leonard Cheshire Disability is registered, to provide impartial adjudication on disputes. They report all their findings to both parties and the Gambling Commission.

8. Problem gambling and gambling responsibly

Leonard Cheshire Disability has put in place the following practice to encourage people to gamble responsibly and seek help should gambling become a problem:

  • The National Gambling helpline number is included on all tickets and entry forms.
  • Our website includes a page offering advice on responsible gambling. This includes the National Gambling helpline and website details for people to refer to should they need further help.
  • The number of ticket books or lottery numbers that is requested by an individual is monitored, with any requests over eight books investigated further by a member of staff, who in turn will contact the supporter to find out more and if necessary pace the remittance.
  • Players can request a self-exclusion from our database for gambling products, which we will record on our supporter database.

For people for whom gambling can become a problem, we have some advice outlined below: 

  • Before playing, set strict limits on how much time and money you're going to spend.
  • Quit while you're ahead.
  • Only gamble with money you can afford to lose.
  • Don't spend more money on gambling with the hope to win back money that you have lost.
  • Keep up other interests and hobbies – don't let gambling take over your life.
  • Don't gamble in order to escape from stress or boredom.

If you are concerned about the amount you are gambling and feel it is taking over your life - or you are concerned for a friend or relative - then the following questions may help give you some guidance.

  • Have others ever criticised your gambling?
  • Have you ever lied to cover up the amount you have gambled or time you have spent doing it?
  • Do arguments, frustrations or disappointments make you want to gamble?
  • Do you gamble alone for long periods?
  • Do you stay away from work or college to gamble?
  • Do you gamble to escape from a boring or unhappy life?
  • Are you reluctant to spend 'gambling money' on anything else?
  • Have you lost interest in your family, friends or pastimes due to gambling?
  • After losing, do you feel you must try to win back your losses as soon as possible?
  • When gambling and you run out of money, do you feel lost and in despair, and need to gamble again as soon as possible?
  • Do you gamble until your last penny is gone?
  • Have you lied, stolen or borrowed just to get money to gamble or to pay gambling debts?
  • Do you feel depressed or even suicidal because of your gambling?

9. Protection of children and the vulnerable

Leonard Cheshire Disability takes steps to ensure that our lotteries do not attract young people. We have the following practices to prevent underage players from participating in any lotteries promoted by ourselves:

  • All promotional materials including the back of all tickets and entry forms will state that players must be over 16.
  • We make every effort to ensure that only supporters over 16 are selected for the lotteries mailings.
  • If we utilise data from cold lists, we will ensure that persons under 16 are excluded where possible.
  • Any player who is found to be providing dishonest information regarding their age automatically forfeits the right to any prize.
  • Any player who is found to be under 16 will be refunded of any monies they have paid to us in relation to the lottery.
  • If we receive a request from a vulnerable person's guardian to cease mailing lottery packs, we will record this on our database immediately, to prevent approaching them again.
  • In the event that we unknowingly mail a lottery pack to a vulnerable person or someone under 16 via data received from a cold list, we will advise the guardian of how to correct the details from the list owners mailing records.
