The Freedom Trail
The Freedom Trail, or Chemin de la Liberté, follows one of the second world war escape routes through the Pyrenees and over the French border into Spain.
During the war, local people risked their lives helping thousands of allied servicemen and Jewish refugees who were fleeing to safety. This challenge passes by memorials and plaques that commemorate their bravery.
Marco, who trekked the Freedom Trail says:
'It's a proper adventure — spectacular scenery and a real way to challenge yourself!'
‘You'll have to do some training on mountainous terrain — as there is almost no flat ground the entire way — but it's an incredible place.’
‘You stay in a mixture of refuges with bunk rooms and then other days it is basic camping. I had a fantastic time, and out of all the treks I’ve done I would definitely do it again!’
